pages in german The Yampú Center of Education, a private school for Mayans accredited by the state, was founded in 1990 in San Pedro Ayampuc close to the capital Guatemala City. The school offers an alternative to public education. The syllabus based on the Mayan cosmology fosters values such as respect for the environment and the importance of team work as a part of the service to the community. The children learn to appreciate their own Mayan culture as an integral part of society in a country of diverse ethnicities and languages such as Guatemala. They begin to understand the Mayan cosmology as a philosophical foundation which contributes to the well-being of the community and thus find support in rediscovering their own cultural identity. In its way the CEY contributes to the effort to improve the conditions of Guatemala's native people which result from the centuries-old history of discrimination against them.
